South Downs Shaun Scores with the Seagulls

This piece was written by Martlets volunteer Simon Eden.

The Seagulls latest signing made his debut at the Amex on Saturday September 9th.

Brighton and Hove Albion are sponsoring South Downs Shaun – one of the 42 differently decorated Shaun the Sheep that will form the latest art trail to be held in the city by Brighton and Hove’s Martlets.

The trail will form an exciting cavalcade of colour throughout Brighton and Hove until November 5.

Baa-rilliant inspiration

South Downs Shaun has been designed by Southwick-based artist Kitty McCurdy – who admits she didn’t have to go far for inspiration.

Kitty said: “All I had to do was walk up the road from my home and there I was – on the South Downs. It offered me just the ideal landscape – the downs, with its stunning views, sweeping skies, wildflowers. And, of course, the kind of environment where you would find sheep.”

A confessed ‘arty type’ at school, Kitty began as an illustrator for magazines before graduating to larger artistic projects after her three children, aged  15 , 13 and 10, were born.

She now specialises in large canvases – some two to three metres square – that vividly capture local landscapes.

Kitty said: “Working on larger art works certainly prepared me for my South Downs Shaun. Transferring my design to a Shaun shape was a challenge certainly. But an enjoyable one – one that enabled me to work alongside other artists in a creative atmosphere while supporting an organisation we all hold dear.”

Supported by the Seagulls

Is she a Seagulls supporter?

“Most certainly. I’m looking forward to seeing Shaun in Europe,” said Kitty.
